The postgraduate programme in the Health Sciences at Ziauddin University is Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary, with wide areas of research and clinical facilities for student learning and innovation are present in different campuses with extensive interaction between the basic science and clinical faculty. Programme objectives are achieved through a combination of formal coursework, comprehensive examination, and an encouraging environment for independent research leading to a thesis. 

PhD programme Structure

The PhD in Subject is offered as a full-time PhD programme for faculty development at Ziauddin University.

The PhD programme duration is 3-8 years (including extension with approval of the statutory body). This will comprise coursework of a minimum of 18 credit hours in two semesters required to be completed in the first year. It will be followed by a comprehensive examination with the declaration of success notified as a satisfactory/unsatisfactory result to decide for the endorsement of PhD candidacy. After that, the PhD research synopsis would be allowed for submission, followed by a period of 2-3 years onwards for original research work (30 credit hours) that leads to an open thesis defence. 

  1. At least 18 years of education in the relevant discipline, Minimum CGPA 3.0/4.00 or 60% marks (in annual system) from HEC-recognized institute (essentially the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees should be HEC attested or/and having HEC Equivalence certificate in case of foreign university education or equivalent local education).
  2. The students having a strong demonstrated interest in obtaining PhD degree, but their CGPA is below 3.00 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or 60% marks (in the annual system) in the most recent relevant degree obtained, may be admitted to a PhD programme subject to study additional courses of 9–12 CH of level 7, taking a zero semester, and score minimum 3.00 out of 4.00 GPA as recommended by the admission committee. The relevant college/faculty admission committee may set the rigorous criteria for assignment of additional courses based on CGPA or any other factor that will be helpfulin determining the suitability of the candidate for the PhD programme. Moreover, the college/department may opt not to offer admissions/invite applications for admission from graduates having below 3.00 (out of 4.0) or 60% marks in the most recent relevant degree obtained.Admission in PhD programme will only be granted after successful completion of zero semester and all the other requirements mentioned above. The students will be provided a separate marksheet/transcript/certificate through the examination department for zero semester results.
  3. Students pursuing MS/MPhil studies and interested in continuing to PhD may be granted provisional admission upon satisfaction with the Admission Committee regarding the Statement of Purpose and students’ commitment to the PhD programme, provided that confirmation of the admission shall be subject to the fulfilment of the following conditions within a period of one year from the date of provisional admission:
    1. Award of MS/MPhil degree, as prescribed in this policy.
    2. Clearance of the admission/aptitude test, as prescribed in this policy.
    3. The candidate should pass the:
      • The university aptitude test equivalent to GRE/HAT General, with a passing score of 60%.
      OR
      • GRE/HAT General/Equivalent tests conducted by testing bodies accredited by HEC, with a passing score of 60%.
      OR
      • The college/department may conduct a subject test for admission in PhD programmes with a passing score of 60% or above, as deemed suitable.

Intra-disciplinary/Other Qualifications

Consistent with best practices internationally (including leading global universities), intra-disciplinary admissions may only be allowed if:
  1. The relevant regulatory body permits.
  2. The applicant has a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in a different discipline.
  3. The applicant has passed the GRE-Subject/Equivalent Test with a minimum of 50% marks in the discipline of admission and has taken 6-9 CH of deficiency courses of level 7 as recommended by the admission committee.
  4. The college/department may opt not to offer admissions/invite applications for admission from graduates having Intra-disciplinary/other qualifications background.

  6. Statement of Purpose

As part of the application for admission to PhD programmes, applicants shall be required to submit a statement of purpose, which shall form an integral part of the application. The admissions committee shall use the information provided to ascertain the preparedness and interest of the candidate in pursuing doctoral studies and whether the department has the requisite resources to train and supervise the doctoral candidate in the subspeciality in which the applicant is interested. A statement of purpose shall, at least, include the following:

  1. Title of the potential research proposal
  2. Clear articulation of the current understanding of the intended field and ideas for potential research
  3. Explanation of the intended impact of the proposed research
  4. The prospective candidates shall demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the area of research.
  5. In case of any other scale of marking in the prerequisite transcript /degree for MS/M Phil/PhD programmes, HEC conversion formula should be used to determine the equivalent CGPA.
  6. If more than one marking scales are mentioned on the prerequisite degree/transcript for MS/ MPhil/PhD programmes, only CGPA will be considered for admission eligibility of candidate in the specific programme.
Admission Process
  • If a candidate has GAT (General/Subject) at the time of application, he/she will be exempted from the university entry test.

            OR

  • If the test is not available in the NTS subject list, then a university committee consisting of at least 3 PhD faculty members in the subject area, approved by the HEC, will conduct the ZU Subject GAT as per the GRE Subject Test and the qualifying score for this will be 70%. The test carries both the subject-specific components (70%) along with English Language and Analytical/Logical Reasoning (30%).
  • Applicants should ensure that a complete application/document is submitted online.
  • Two academic references and a statement of research interest.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with a short research proposal presentation to the PhD Admission Committee.
Coursework
  1. Courses of 20 credit hours shall be completed during the first year (two semesters) of the PhD degree programme.
  2. Coursework of 20 credit hours includes core and electives, and a semester shall not be more than 14 credit hours. The coursework will comprise:
    1. Compulsory Core Courses: These will be based on 14 credit hours and will be offered during the semester. These are essential for all students.
    2. Elective courses: Elective course will be chosen by the students related to their interest/speciality. This 06 credit hour elective course will be taken during the semester. Minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory for appearing in examinations.

The student shall be given two attempts for examination if his/her CGPA falls below 2.5 and will be dropped from the programme if the CGPA falls below 2.5 after the second time. After the declaration of the semester examination for the coursework, students will be eligible for the comprehensive examination. After the declaration of the result/completion of all the requirements for the coursework, the PG office shall write to the student to fulfil the administrative requirements for the written comprehensive exam within three weeks’ time. It may include fee clearance, exam request form submission, and the proposed date within the allowed duration of six months from the date of declaration of the result of the last course taken by the candidate. The outcomes may be Pass, with condition (to appear and pass the oral examination), Failure with retake and Failure.

PhD Research Proposal / Proposal Defense
  • Every student will pursue his/her research at the constituent Colleges/Institutes/Hospitals/Services and Advanced research laboratory at Ziauddin University.
  • A PhD candidate can submit his research proposal after completion of 18 credit hours of coursework with a Minimum 3.0 CGPA.
  • Separate Guidance and Examination Committee (GEC) would be constituted for each student separately. The Committee would consist of four to five members, including the Executive Director Research, the Director of Postgraduate (PG), potential PhD supervisors and internal subject reviewers.
  • Synopsis open defence will be conducted in the University Journal Club in front of the Guidance and Examination Committee (GEC).
  • Director PG shall communicate the GEC decision and ERC approval (where applicable) to the candidate and the supervisor by an official email within one week after the proposal defence.
  • Synopsis certification by the Ethical Review Committee (ERC).
  • Final synopsis endorsement by the Board of Advanced Studies & Research (BASR).
  • A PhD student must have at least 01 original research papers published/accepted for publication before submission of the final thesis, presented in at least HEC approved X category journals with an impact factor in the relevant area as specified by GEC and endorsed by faculty/departmental RC.
Thesis Evaluation and Examination
  • Candidates should submit the thesis in the specified format to the office of Director PG with the proper approval of the assigned supervisor(s) not later than 3 months after the successful 3rd Progress Evaluation.
  • Thesis submission for evaluation by two foreign experts to the Examination Department with a checklist of required training documents (GAT result, Semester results, Comprehensive transcript, ERC certificate, BASR synopsis approval and a published article in HEC/PMDC recognised W/X category journal).
  • A plagiarism test report of the thesis is necessary and must be submitted along with the submission of the thesis.
  • The Board of Advanced Studies and Research shall appoint two international and two national examiners with scholarly backgrounds in relevant fields.
  • After approval of international reviewers, the thesis would be submitted to national examiners by the controller of examination for open thesis defence.
  • Guidance and Examination Committee (GEC) may comprise the Executive Research Director, the Research Director, the Postgraduate Director, the Supervisor, two External Examiner and one Internal Examiner.
  • Final step is the BASR endorsement for the degree award.
