Mega-ROX
🧬 What is the Mega-ROX study?
Mega-ROX is a large international study helping doctors learn the most suitable approach to oxygen therapy that is required for very sick patients who need a ventilator (a machine that helps them breathe in the Intensive Care Unit – ICU).
Oxygen is essential for life, but how much oxygen a patient needs or receives is highly debated among experts. As a result, patients may receive more oxygen than what they need. Some studies say that this is harmful while others say that it is beneficial. So, Mega-ROX aims to find an answer to these queries and help doctors understand the best amount to give so patients can recover comfortably and safely.
🔍 What happens in the study?
- Patients included in the study are divided into two groups:
- One group receives a higher level of oxygen
- The other group receives a lower level of oxygen
- Both groups receive safe and closely monitored care.
- Doctors carefully check how patients are doing during and after treatment to see which approach supports recovery better.
🌍 Mega-ROX at Ziauddin University
Ziauddin University is part of this important global study which has been reviewed and approved by the National Bioethics Committee of Pakistan.

📌 Important information for potential participants and their families
- You or your loved one will be invited to participate in the Mega-ROX study only if the treating doctor feels both types of oxygen treatments are safe and suitable.
- Taking part in the study is completely your or your family’s choice. You and/or your family can decide together what feels right for you.
- No matter what you decide, you or your loved one will continue to get the same care and attention from the doctors and nurses.
