PhD Human Nutrition & Dietetics

The PhD programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics is designed as a weekend programme to meet the needs of working professionals. The minimum duration for a PhD programme is 03 years, and the maximum duration is 8 years. Students have to complete the coursework of 18 credit hours in semesters I and II if they are from the same discipline. Following the completion of coursework, every PhD student shall be required to pass the comprehensive examination to be granted candidacy as a PhD researcher.  

PhD graduates can pursue careers as university professors, research scientists, and policy advisors in government and international health organisations. Opportunities exist in research institutions, where they can lead studies on public health nutrition, metabolic disorders, and food sustainability. The food industry offers roles in product innovation and regulatory affairs. Graduates may also work as independent consultants, contributing to evidence-based nutrition strategies and shaping public health initiatives globally.

Candidates with an MS/MPhil or equivalent degree in nutrition or a related discipline are eligible to apply (candidates with a BS in Nutrition & Dietetics/Home Economics with Nutrition major will be preferred). 

  1. Appearance in the Ziauddin University Entrance Test is mandatory for all applicants who wish to seek admission in the PhD programme.
  2. The test shall comprise the following sections:

Section I: Nutrition 70% 

Section II: English 15% 

Section III: Analytical Reasoning 15% 

iii. Candidates will be required to score at least 60% marks in each section to be eligible for consideration for provisional admission.

  1. If a candidate has already qualified for the International (subject) GRE/GAT/NTS, he/she will be exempted from the subject test component. The validity of the International (subject) GRE is 5 years, and the NTS/GAT is for two years. The minimum passing score of GRE is 60%, and that of NTS/GAT is 60%. However, the candidate has to appear in an interview. 

 

INTERVIEW 

To complete the admissions process, all students who pass the Ziauddin University Entrance Test must show up in person for an interview with the College of Human Nutrition & Dietetics. 

Coursework

A maximum of 12 Credit Hour courses can be taken in one semester. A minimum of 18 credit hours (two semesters) of the coursework will be required to be completed by those who have done MS/MPhil in Human Nutrition & Dietetics.

The PhD programme fosters expertise in advanced nutritional research, policy development, and academic leadership. Scholars will gain proficiency in conducting independent research, critically evaluating scientific data, and developing innovative dietary solutions. The programme focuses on addressing global nutrition challenges, disease prevention, and metabolic health. Graduates will refine their analytical skills, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and develop interdisciplinary approaches to human nutrition. Additionally, they will be equipped to influence nutrition policies, mentor students, and lead research projects in diverse healthcare settings.
