World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) celebrated by Ziauddin University

College of Public Health, Ziauddin University (ZU), and the Fleming Fund, DAI collaborated to organize an awareness-raising seminar for medical students, doctors, nurses, and other para-medical staff on the prevention of antimicrobial resistance.

Consul General of Malaysia Visits Ziauddin University for Collaborative Academic Endeavours

The esteemed Consul General of Malaysia, Mr. Herman Hardynata Ahmad, visited Ziauddin University. The principal aim of this meeting was to explore educational prospects for both Malaysian and Ziauddin University academic staff and students, as well as the possibility of signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the two institutions.

Mr. Herman Hardynata Ahmad held conversations with the top management and academic staff of the university throughout his visit to look at possible ways to strengthen ties between the two countries.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Nida Hussain, Pro-chancellor, and Prof. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Vice-chancellor. Dr. Shehla Najib, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Human Sciences; Shaista Sarki, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Politics & Governance; Dr. Zulfiqar Umrani, Director of ORIC; and Amir Shahzad, Deputy General Manager of PR & Communications, were also present in this meeting.

This diplomatic meeting demonstrated the common goal of advancing international collaboration, cultural understanding, and academic exchanges. In addition to expressing his excitement for developing these academic alliances, Mr. Herman Hardynata Ahmad recognised the enormous potential for cooperation between Pakistan and Malaysia in the area of higher education.

Ziauddin University is proud to have welcomed the Consul General of Malaysia. It is now ready to start a collaborative academic journey that will surely benefit both countries and provide opportunities for faculty and students to reach new heights.

NGS Unveiled: From DNA Extraction to Bioinformatics Analysis

Our three-day workshop, titled ‘NGS Unveiled: From DNA Extraction to Bioinformatics Analysis,’ proved to be a resounding success, bringing together 36 participants from 14 diverse institutions within the province. This event was particularly notable for its innovative approach, offering hands-on experiences in library preparation and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis, which not only deepened the participants’ understanding but also equipped them with valuable NGS skills. These newfound capabilities are sure to drive progress in genomics research, where the study of an organism’s entire DNA holds the promise of addressing a multitude of biological questions.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Molecular Medicine and the Department of Research in collaboration with the 23rd Pair Lab, with generous sponsorship from Hospicare and Molecular Biology Products. The program director, Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza, provided enlightening insights to the participants, focusing on the clinical significance of genomics within modern healthcare and medicine. The event also received attention from Hon. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Irfan Haider and the dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Abass Zafar, who addressed the audience and presented certificates and shields to the deserving participants.

Dr. Ambrina Khatoon, the chief organizer and Incharge of the Genomics Lab at Ziauddin University, played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s success and impact. Alongside her, the dedicated team members, including Mr. Muhammad Jhazaib, Dr. Yamna Khurshid, Ms. Urfa Karim, and Dr. Madeeha Sadiq, made significant contributions to the workshop’s achievements.”

Pakistan Society of Hepatology Conference 2023

We are happy to announce that Dr. Asma Shabbir, a dedicated PhD Scholar at Ziauddin University, has been honored with an award for her groundbreaking genomic research at the Pakistan Society of Hepatology Conference 2023. Dr. Shabbir’s remarkable oral presentation showcased her extensive work in collaboration with her esteemed supervisory team, which included Prof. Talat Mirza, Dr. Ambrina Khatoon & Prof. Zaigham Abbas from the Research, Molecular Medicine and Gastroenterology Departments at Ziauddin University, Karachi. This pioneering research marks a significant milestone as it represents the first-ever study of its kind, employing cutting-edge Whole Exome Sequencing technology to uncover pathogenic variants related to fatty liver within the Pakistani population. We are also proud to announce that Dr. Shabbir has received an invitation to present her research at ABRCMS in Phoenix, Arizona, further underscoring the excellence and relevance of her work on a global scale. Congratulations, Dr. Asma Shabbir, on this well-deserved recognition and achievement!

Poster Presentation at University of Sharjah

We would like to congratulate Dr. Shumaila Usman, an emerging Pakistani scientist from the Department of Molecular Medicine at Ziauddin University, in recognition of her scientific work presentation at the 4th Forum for Women in Research held at University of Sharjah. Dr. Shumaila is a Stem Cell biologist working on the stem cell therapy for Chronic Liver disorders. Her engagement and dedication to this cause have been truly inspiring and has gained international recognition.

Fundamental Cell Culture Techniques

Two days introductory workshop on Fundamental Cell culture techniques was conducted by Department of Molecular Medicine from 22nd– 23rd Aug, 2023 at Multidisciplinary Research Labs, Ziauddin University.

Dr. Shumaila Usman started the program with the welcome address, followed by the recitation of Holy Quran. Executive Director Research Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza highlighted the Clinical perspectives of the cell culture techniques. She said the ultimate objective of such events is to create awareness and knowledge based for new methods and techniques for practical implications and research.

Dr Shumaila gave a brief introduction of the cell culture technique to convey basic understanding before lab demonstrations. Video session on the important cell culture techniques was conducted prior hands-on training. Isolation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Umbilical cord, trypsinization, cell counting, seeding and cryopreservation was conducted by Dr. Shumaila. Dr. Irfan Khan, Assistant Professor, Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine delivered a lecture on Stem Cells from Bench to Bedside, highlighting the clinical importance of the stem cells research.

Second day of the workshop started with the treatment of the cells with compounds for cytotoxicity analysis. Dr. Rehan Imad conducted a lecture prior to the lab session. MTT assay was performed and the results analysis was explained to the students followed by a lecture on Recent Advances in Cell Culture by Dr. Shumaila Usman.  Extensive knowledge and practical skills were imparted through the lectures, video sessions & interactive sessions along with the hands-on training. Participants were assessed for their knowledge at the end of the workshop.

The productive activity was concluded and certificate distribution among the participants by Dean Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Abbas Zafar and Executive Director Research Dr Talat Mirza The session was closed after taking feedback from the students.
