Pro-Chancellor Ziauddin University Dr. Nida Hussain distributed scholarship cheques among 4 meritorious ZU M.Phil/MS/Ph.D students from the Faculty of Health Sciences. The cheque distribution ceremony was held on Tuesday 11 April 2022 at Ziauddin University. Dr. Nida Hussain distributed the scholarship cheques among the students amounting to Rs. 230,000 each. The Registrar, Capt Waqar Hussain, and Director ORIC Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Umrani facilitated the scholarships which were approved by the Sindh HEC. We wish success to our scholarship-winning students!
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nadir Danishmand, Director of the Center for Public Policy and Governance at Ziauddin University’s Faculty of Law, Politics, and Governance. Nadir was an exceptional leader and a distinguished scholar, whose contributions to the field of public policy and governance were immense.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Nadir’s family, friends, and colleagues at Ziauddin University during this difficult time. Nadir’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
On Friday, February 10th, 2023, Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) and Ziauddin University launched Pakistan’s first National Centre for Research on Parental Mental Health and Child Development at the Ziauddin University. Pro Chancellor, Prof Nida Hussain, The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, CEO PILL, Prof Nasim Chaudhry. Prof Zafar Abbas, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Director ORIC Dr. Zulfiqar Umrani, Chair Department of Psychiatry, Ziauddin University Prof Imran Chaudhry, Assistant Directors PILL Mr. Ameer Bux and Sehrish Tofique were present at the occasion. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed to facilitate joint working in mental health research, teaching and training.
Director, ORIC and programme organizer, Dr. Zulfiqar Umrani welcomed the delegates and briefed them about the importance of mental health, particularly research and capacity building in health and social sciences.
Speaking on the occasion of the inauguration Pro Chancellor, Prof Nida Hussain said that it will be a state-of-the-art research centre to lead work on parental and child mental health and wellbeing with a strong focus on capacity and capability building of existing researchers and healthcare workers. She also talked about the importance of training teachers and parents to raise awareness of mental health issues and to early identify and treat them.
The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder emphasized the importance of mental health issues particularly after covid-19. He assured his full support to the whole team and congratulated them on the successful launch of the centre.
CEO PILL, Prof Nasim Chaudhry said that “The purpose of this centre is to work for parental mental health and ultimately enhance child development. parents, especially in LMICs, experience huge stigma of mental health issues and are unable to fully contribute to their child’s development if they are depressed. Prof Chaudhry highlighted that the evidence-based Learning Through Play plus programme and all the work PILL has completed including an ongoing Grand Challenges Canada funded (LTP+Dads-R-TTS-2106-39652) trial across the city of Karachi should be considered top priority to promote early child development and parental mental health while National Institute of Health (NIH) funded SABAR 2 (NIHR132027) aimed to inform new health care solutions to end preventable stillbirth and neonatal deaths and provide supportive care.
Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof Dr Zafar Abbas emphasised the importance of collaboration and partnerships and working together towards shared goals for positive outcomes.
Chairman Department of Psychiatry at Ziauddin Hospital, Prof Imran Chaudhry stressed upon early identification and treatment and shared his experience of working in the UK largest early intervention service. He said through learning from the developed countries we can build on similar models in Pakistan with specific cultural modifications. Prof Chaudhry also discussed the world leading Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT-PK) programme soon to be started with the support from Sindh Health Department in districts Sukkur and Qamber Shahdadkot.
The meeting was concluded with a dedication and commitment that the national centre for research on parental mental health and child development will be a state-of-the-art centre to investigate the prevalence, causes, methods and prevention strategies to overcome this significant public health problem.

The workshop on Research Methodology was organized by the Registrar office through the Department of Research in collaboration with the Directorate of Educational Development (DED) and Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) from 22nd to 25th November, 2022. This workshop has been designed to promote the professional development of the faculty with capacity building in research and enhanced productivity. The multidisciplinary participants represented over 10 departments of ZU including the College of Eastern Medicine, ZUFONAM, Medical Technology, CSLHS, FLAHS, Pharmacy, Medical and Dental Colleges.
The program started with the greatest name of Allah and a welcome address by Dr. Yamna Khurshid. The keynote lecture highlighting the significance of the workshop and research process was delivered by Executive Director of Research, Dr. Talat Mirza. The first two days of the workshop were dedicated to qualitative & quantitative research, critical literature review, literature search, educational research, systematic review & meta-analysis and scientific writing including synopsis, thesis and manuscript and facilitated by Dr. Talat Mirza, Dr. Kiran Hashmi, Dr. Zil-e-Rubab, Dr. Amna Aamir, Dr. Syeda Rakhshanda, Dr. Saeeda Baig, Dr. Farah Ahmed and Mr. Shiraz Khurshid.
The third day was devoted and conducted by Dr. Zulfiqar Umrani, Director ORIC and Mr. Ali Haider. They provided adequate knowledge about the ZU research & innovation ecosystem and grant writing. The honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Irfan Hyder delivered an intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking lecture promoting and advocating research culture in ZU.
On day fourth, the first session on Endnote was conducted by Dr. Rehan Imad. Dr. Farah Ahmed, delivered a lecture on statistical methods followed forward by Dr. S. Hasan Danish hands-on session on SPSS.
The participants’ feedback was overwhelmingly favorable and encouraging. They appreciated the efforts of the facilitators and organizers. They acknowledged that they gained valuable knowledge which will help them in their research.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations back in 2015 to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Nurses are working hard in achieving sustainable development goals for a better society in the future. Ziauddin University, Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (ZUFONAM) Community Stream organized a one-day session on ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ on July 4th-5th, 2022 for students of BSN I and IV years who are future nurses. The presence of Madam Farhana Siddiqui and her team members made a great difference in the learning of SDGs for ZUFONAM students. On the first day, Dr. Atif Anjum and Madam Farhana briefed students about the background and significance of SDGs to all 1st-year students. On the second day, Madam Farhana and Major Sadia Kanwal taught students about SDGs and gave them new ideas about what would they need to do and how would they work in the community. In this 2nd-day seminar, 210 participants including the faculty members (Mr. Jonathan Johnson, Ms. Bilquis Alidino, Ms. Mashal Hirani, Ms. Gulshan, and Ms, Sahaar Bashir) and students attended the session. All participants made us proud and committed that they will work hard to achieve SDGs. It was an amazing, interesting, and learning experience with the Ziauddin University Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
