Department of Molecular Medicine

The field of Molecular Medicine is often referred to as “tomorrow’s medicine”.  It is a newly emerging and most sought field in medicine globally with a focus on the description of diseases at the molecular and genetic levels with marked changes in the diagnostic modalities.

Molecular Medicine is an interdepartmental, multidisciplinary training programme fostering the development of scientists and educators who are prepared for lifelong participation in research and other intellectual pursuits. With an emphasis on bridging basic and translational science, Molecular Medicine students would receive advanced training in the theory and practice of biomedical science.

Ziauddin University has already taken the prestigious lead among medical universities in Pakistan to introduce this programme for the training of young scientists (clinical and non-clinical), who are keen to pursue careers in basic medical research. This programme is designed to provide candidates with a science and medical background with a sound understanding of the molecular mechanisms of diseases at par with international standards. The well-designed programme covers the fields of Molecular Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Pathophysiology, Molecular Oncology, Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cells Therapy, Molecular Pharmacology and Bioinformatics.  Our goal is to foster teaching and research activities in the study of human diseases with the application of cutting-edge molecular and cell biology techniques.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Molecular Medicine is to discover, apply and disseminate knowledge of the basis of health and disease and further translate it with innovative tools for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

Salient Features
  • State-of-the-art multidisciplinary research labs
  • Wide spectrum of courses and research areas
  • Highly qualified and foreign-trained Ph.D. faculty members
  • Opportunities to collaborate with local and foreign universities
  • Participation in Workshops/Seminars/Conferences
  • Convenient class schedule
  • Cost-effective fee structure

Molecular medicine is a comprehensive field that aims to provide insight to researchers regarding the development of molecular biology tools and the identification of molecular targets for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of a diverse number of human diseases.

The value of the Molecular Medicine programme is to develop human resources with knowledge and skills that have widespread applications in both basic sciences and clinical work at medical institutions, research and development (R & D) organizations, pharmaceutical industry, molecular biology laboratories and clinical labs etc.

The research degree would always be an additional academic qualification in all fields, particularly for clinical faculty giving them a research edge for promotions in various academic posts. Training-based education is largely focused on high-quality clinical care but academic institutions require additional research acumen for the generation of new knowledge from evidence-based medicine therefore; they can work as research associates/ research officers and scientists in clinical departments.
