MPhil in Molecular Medicine

The MPhil programme in Molecular Medicine, launched in Spring 2021 at Ziauddin College of Molecular Medicine, represents a pioneering initiative in Pakistan tailored to cultivate a new cadre of researchers proficient in cutting-edge molecular biology and genetics. This programme uniquely caters to individuals with backgrounds in medical, dental, and biological or pharmaceutical sciences, offering a robust curriculum that spans from foundational principles to advanced research methodologies.

Our MPhil programmes are structured to provide a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for conducting impactful research in basic, translational, and clinical settings. Students engage deeply with the latest technological innovations in molecular medicine, positioning them to contribute significantly to the evolution of innovative healthcare practices.

Recognised by both the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), the programme underscores its commitment to academic excellence and professional accreditation. By fostering a collaborative learning environment and encouraging interdisciplinary approaches, we aim to empower our graduates to address complex medical challenges and drive transformative advancements in healthcare.

Join us at Ziauddin College of Molecular Medicine and embark on a transformative journey towards becoming a leader in molecular research in medicine and clinical innovation.

Mission

Through excellence in teaching, training and research, prepare scholars to address the priority heath needs in relation to recent advances in molecular biology, genetics and robust technology by conducting the research and disseminating the findings to create a better world.

Objectives

At ZU, we offer MPhil in molecular medicine to

  1. Promote systematic scientific inquiry built on comprehensive theoretical concepts using evidence-based medical research and modern technical skills for better healthcare outcomes.
  2. Nurture leadership skills through scholarly environment to investigate the clinical problems in diverse settings by engaging physicians and scientists.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME:

Minimum duration to complete MPhil is 2-4 years with 30 credit hours.

Coursework of 24 credit hours in the core and elective subjects.

Research/Thesis work of 6 credit hours on a research topic approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and Research

Two semesters of 12 credit hours each will be offered in the 1st year, where each semester will consist of 18 weeks, including examinations.

Credit hour of a theory/lecture is of sixty minutes (60) duration (including a 10-minute break) per week during a Semester. However, in case of project/laboratory/research/project work, one credit hour may require two to three contact hours per week during a semester.

An MPhil in Molecular Medicine provides a broad range of career opportunities, both within academia and in various sectors of the biomedical and healthcare industries. Here is a detailed overview of the career opportunities available to graduates:

PhD Programmes: Many MPhil graduates continue their academic journey by enrolling in PhD programmes. This path allows for deeper specialisation in molecular medicine and related fields such as cancer biology, immunology, or genetics.

Faculty Positions: With sufficient experience and publications, individuals can secure academic positions such as lecturers and assistant professors.

Clinical Research: Graduates can work as clinical research associates or coordinators, where they oversee clinical trials, manage patient data, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Genetic Counselling: With additional certification or having undergraduate degree in genetics, individuals can become genetic counsellors, helping patients understand genetic conditions and make informed medical decisions.

Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Companies: Opportunities in R&D roles involve developing new drugs, diagnostics, and therapeutic strategies.

Diagnostics and Personalised Medicine: Graduates can work in companies focusing on developing diagnostic tools and personalised medicine approaches.

Public Health and Policy: Roles in public health agencies or policy organisations involve using molecular medicine expertise to inform public health strategies, disease prevention programmes, and health policy decisions.

Science Communication and Outreach: Graduates can work in science communication, writing for scientific journals, popular science magazines

The MPhil programme prepares students to attain the educational objectives by ensuring that students demonstrate achievement of the following outcomes.

  1. Identify key concepts in cellular and molecular biology and molecular pathology with its application in developing molecular interventions of diseases.
  2. Self-directed and Lifelong Learner
  3. Update one’s own knowledge and skills in line with the changing evidence-based practice to contribute effectively in the HEI, R & D with industrial engagement.
  4. Demonstrate oral and written communication skills while interacting with peers, teachers and clinicians at workplace effectively.
  5. Participate in the symposia, workshop & conferences to disseminate knowledge.
  6. Demonstrate collaborative drive and skills while conducting research work.
  7. Conduct technical skills and research work considering ethical values.
  8. Employ a systematic approach in research methods to:
    1. Plan
    2. Collect
    3. Process
    4. Analyse
    5. Publish (in HEC recognised impact factor journals)
  9. Apply scientific knowledge to critically analyse the published scientific work.
  10. Develop technical skills in basic research to impact translational, clinical research (bench to bedside) and bench to industry approach.
  11. Exhibit leadership skills while organising professional activities, including workshops, seminars and conferences.

Candidates possessing a minimum of sixteen years of education or four years of education after intermediate (with a minimum of 124 credit hours) in biological science, biotechnology, pharmacology, genetics, medical technology or MBBS/BDS or an equivalent degree from HEC recognised institutions with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a scale of 4.00 in BS/MSc on the semester system or 60% marks in BS/MSc in annual system. Foreign degree equivalent to BS/MSc is also acceptable for admission. Candidates will be selected on the basis of ZU M.Phil entry test/GAT followed by interview.

Final selection of candidates is based on cumulative merit determined by the previous academic record, experience, entry test and interview.
