Bachelors of Dental Surgery

Ziauddin College of Dentistry offers a four-year undergraduate degree programme leading to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), under the cooperative auspices of Ziauddin University.

At Ziauddin College of Dentistry, a student is identified as an adult learner and is expected to develop as a responsible individual taking care of community dental problems.

Mission

To develop dental health professionals from diverse groups of people as leaders, possessing virtues of dignity and humanity, with clinical excellence, to meet the primary oral health care needs. Emphasis is placed on promoting critical reasoning, self-directed and lifelong learning competencies to research, communicate and lead efficiently. Community-oriented, evidence-based, and innovative technology-enhanced teaching enables students to be ethically and socially accountable in treating patients and addressing the challenges of the dental healthcare industry.

BDS programme is divided into four academic years; each year comprises a number of modules related to subject specific scientific information, in accordance with PMDC recognized curriculum. Ziauddin College of Dentistry has taken the initiative of developing and implementing a horizontally integrated curriculum. The curriculum makes use of the latest teaching strategies, which are aimed at providing better quality of education to the students.

I. Skillful 
i. Diagnose the common clinical presentations on the basis of patho-physiology, clinical features and investigation findings.
ii. Compare various therapeutic options according to patients’ needs on the basisof indications,  contraindications, and mechanisms of action, side-effects & cost- effectiveness.
iii. Formulate management plan of the common clinical problems on the basis of severity and complexity of the diseases.
iv. Justify the management plan with or without referral decisions by using critical reasoning skills on the basis of:
·  relevant basic, clinical & community health science knowledge by applying evidence-based medicine (EBM)
· primary, secondary & tertiary dimensions of care to provide safe and holistic healthcare
v. Perform the essential clinical procedures, according to the international standards and guidelines.

Admission to Ziauddin College of Dentistry for a four (4) year (BDS) degree course is open to all individuals who meet the selection criteria. All candidates are chosen for their academic achievements and potential.
Students are admitted to the first year of BDS on previous high school and/or college academic record, and score in MDCAT / test and interview conducted by the Ziauddin University and as determined by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. The selection of student is on the basis of an admission policy approved by the Governing Body of Ziauddin University, which is in line with the regulations of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). Students are largely admitted in the category of Local Residents. A few seats are available for overseas students (as defined by the Rules).

Note: Applicants are required to fill the MBBS and BDS forms separately.

Criteria for Admission

      • Have passed the MDCAT examination conducted by the National Medical Authority.
      • Pakistani and foreign students are required to appear for an interview.
      • Proficiency in the English language, both in written and verbal expression is required.
      • With GCE Cambridge/London, ‘Advanced level’ (A level), American High School Diploma, and other equivalent Certificates or Diplomas, an equivalence to HSSC (Pre-Medical) equivalence with 60% will be required from IBCC. 
      • For candidates who have completed HSSC or are awaiting results are also eligible to apply on a provisional basis.
      • It will be necessary for candidates in Pakistan and those following the Pakistani System of education overseas to have read Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as mandatory subjects at the higher secondary school level.
      • Candidates who have completed high school overseas may apply mathematics in lieu of physics.

Pakistani Students:

“Pakistani student” means a student who is a Pakistani national or defined as an overseas Pakistani under applicable law and may hold dual nationality and may be resident or non-resident in Pakistan.

Foreign Students:

“Foreign student” means a student who is not a Pakistani student and holds only a foreign nationality. The inclusion of SAT II scores will be discontinued and will not be used for merit calculation.

Student Selection:
The final selection of local resident students is decided on the following weightage:

Ziauddin University Test 30%
Higher Secondary Certificate: 30%
Ziauddin University Interview: 20%
MDCAT: 20%

Note: Before submitting applications, applicants must ensure that they have complied with the instructions given with the application form. It remains the responsibility of the applicant to submit an application according to the instructions. Students are expected to submit photocopies of documents along with the application and originals for the purpose of verification by the university. If required, the university will check the authenticity of the documents submitted with the concerned school, college, board, or university.

Admission Test

Applicants will be given sufficient time to appear in the test. The test consists of Multiple-Choice Questions of various types. In addition to Biology, Chemistry and Physics corresponding to that expected at the end of Intermediate Examination or equivalent qualifications e.g., 12th Year, etc., there will be questions on English and General Knowledge as well.

Interview

Short listed applicants will be interviewed to assess their suitability to complete the BDS course and pursue a career in health sciences.

STRUCTURE OF INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR ADMISSION TO FIRST YEAR BDS FOR SESSION 202324

As per the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Act/Admissions Regulations, an interview will be conducted according to the rules in force at the time.

The following documents are required to be submitted through admission.zu.edu.pk prior to the interview:

  • Scanned and attested copies of matric/O-Level mark sheet.
  • Intermediate/A-Level mark sheet.
  • MDCAT result/score and merit number.

The interview process is divided into writing a personal statement giving a personal insight about the candidate; (interests, strengths, weaknesses, accomplishments etc.). The personal statement which should not be more than 300 words will be submitted through admission.zu.edu.pk prior to the interview. An interview will be scheduled after submission of the personal statement and above-mentioned documents.

Interview will be based on general knowledge, self-assessment, analytical skills, critical thinking, motivation and interest in healthcare and knowledge about ethics in healthcare.

Questions will also be based on the personal statement earlier submitted.

Each candidate will be assessed by two interviewers. In case of major discrepancy, a third interviewer will adjudicate.

Each candidate will be allocated 10 minutes for the interview.

Notification of Admission

The Registrar of the university will notify students who are successful in the admission process. Successful applicants are given a deadline by which to accept the offer of admission. Offers not accepted by the given deadline will be cancelled.

Requirements for Selected Students

Successful students selected for BDS programme are expected to fulfill the following:

• Verification of Educational Testimonials

Original transcripts, mark sheets and certificates to be brought for verification by the university.

• Medical Examination

The undergraduate medical programme is both physically and mentally demanding. Students offered admission are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination including laboratory investigations and chest X-ray, before they are allowed to join classes.

• Immunization

Clinical experience carries a small personal risk of infection. In their own interest, and also in the interest of patients and others, students must provide evidence of immunization against the following:
Tuberculosis (BCG), Diphtheria, Poliomyelitis, Pertussis, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, Measles/Mumps (and Rubella for females)

All candidates are chosen for their academic achievements and potential. Students are admitted to the first year of BDS on previous high school and/or college academic record, and score in MDCAT / test and interview conducted by the Ziauddin University and as determined by the Pakistan Medical Commission. The selection of student is on the basis of an admission policy approved by the Governing Body of Ziauddin University, which is in line with the regulations of the Pakistan Medical Council (PMC). Students are largely admitted in the category of Local Residents. A few seats are available for overseas students (as defined by the Rules). Note: Applicants are required to fill the MBBS and BDS forms separately.
