A Two Day Hands-On Workshop Cell Culture from Fundamentals to Applications

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Research conducted a hands-on
workshop on the Fundamentals and Applications of Cell Culture on 13 th and 14 th December,
2022. The aim of the workshop was to equip the participants with basic cell culture techniques
including harvesting, subculturing, seeding, cryopreservation, revival, drug preparation, and
cytotoxicity assays.
The program commenced with a recitation from Holy Quran. Dr. Yamna Khurshid welcomed the
participants and highlighted the significance of cell culture in the research. The keynote lecture
highlighting the clinical applications of cell culture was delivered by Executive Director
Research, Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza. Dr. Shumaila Usman followed forward to give the participants
an introduction to the cell culture. The participants were then provided hands-on experience in
sub-culturing, counting, seeding, and drug preparations by Dr. Shumaila Usman, Dr. Rehan
Imad, and Dr. Yamna Khurshid.
On day second, Dr. Yamna Khurshid further broadened the understanding of the participants on
invitro cytotoxicity and cell viability assays. The lecture was followed by hands-on sessions on
drug treatment and MTT assay. The workshop ended with a thought-provoking and energizing
lecture on recent advances in cell culture by an invited speaker from the Aga Khan University
Dr. Mati Ur Rehman. The participants shared that they gained new insight and valuable
knowledge which will help them in designing and developing their research projects.
