Diploma in Transfusion Medicine

Diploma in Transfusion Medicine is a PMDC recognized distinctive programme that focuses on the principles and practical skills necessary for effective organizational leadership in blood transfusion services. The focus is on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The DTM programme develops knowledge and skills that are critical for mid-and-upper-level physician management positions in transfusion services. Students learn through case studies, class discussion exercise, projects and simulation. Students receive mentoring from a faculty experienced in blood bank and transfusion services. There is great emphasis on hands-on bench training along with teamwork and no emphasis on the passive absorption of knowledge.The balanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the Clinical Practicum programmes enable residents to work independently.

Clinical Training

The diploma in Transfusion Medicine at Ziauddin University enables the residents to build strong analytical skills and exhibit empirical understanding in the laboratories. Residents are placed at laboratory rotations to work closely with medical technologists and medical staff to learn the theory and methodology involved in serologic testing, and the steps involved in issuing blood components. They also serve as liaisons between the clinician and the laboratory, providing consultation concerning the appropriate use of blood components, investigating transfusion reactions, and correlating laboratory test results with clinical findings.Besides, they are also trained to operate instruments and tools necessary for blood transfusion.These trainings start after every semester examination and the cycles continues till the final year of the programme.

Teaching And Learning Strategies

Ziauddin University, College of Medical Technology promotes culturally inclusive, impelling and constructive learning environment giving specific consideration to student's own psychological and sensory status and recognizing, nurturing and developing one's strength to foster the learning process and positive interaction among the peers, groups and stimulates independence to meet the challenges of the real world. Subsequently, explicit and structure teaching is practiced and supported by audio and visual materials installed in each classroom. Contemporary practices such as blended learning, flipped classroom, and facilitation are provided meeting the course requirement of the programme. The brightest feature of college of medical technology is that Academic block and Clinical Laboratories are under the same roof which reinforces learning by implementing teaching examples in real time cases. Finally, at the end of each semester, students are posted in Clinical Laboratories Ziauddin Hospital to implement their knowledge and upgrade their skills.

Assessment Policies And Procedure

Enrolled candidates are assessed and examined for theory and skills with periodic examinations. Continuous assessment is practiced incorporating multiple summative and formative assessments to measure the extent to which students have achieved the desire outcome. It includes mid-terms, projects, portfolios, clinical practicum and competencies.
